How To Increase Energy and Motivation[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref].
(This series is based on the book High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way. I highly recommend this book to create real, life changing habits. I was not paid to write this OR given this book for free. I genuinely love it and have found it absolutely life changing for me – in just the few weeks of reading it – so I wanted to share it. I hope you find it the same for you!)
The second high performance habit is “generate energy”[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref]. This was one of my favourite parts of Burchards book because it’s all about how to increase energy and motivation.
We’re in the middle of huge health trend – paleo, vegan, low carb, high fat. We’ve seen all the vloggers! We’ve heard the eat well & treat your body right advice.
While Burchard does say that high performers eat well and exercise at least 3 times a week[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref]. He also talks about how high performers have a “holistic”[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref] energy. It’s not just about physical energy but mental & emotional energy.[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref]
To increase your energy and motivation Burchard recommended looking at things like:

Transitioning Energy[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref]
There’s an energy we use in “transitioning”[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref] between tasks. Tranisiton energy can take up a lot of our energy by itself… now think about how many things we stop and start in the day. That’s a lot of energy! It’s not wonder we try so hard to figure out how to boost our energy when we’re tired. To combat this, Burchard suggests using transition meditation (TM).
It involves stopping in between every transition (i.e. from driving to going into the office) you take 1-2 minutes to breathe & practicing releasing any emotions or energy. Then you ask yourself how you want to go into the next transition. Do you want to be clear, calm, focused etc.[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref]. This is a refreshing way to practice how to increase energy and motivation.
I’ve tried this and found it great to boost my energy and get more energy fast. And it only takes a have a few minutes in between tasks. I think the trick with this is it helps make you feel like you’re running the day instead of letting the day run you.
TM isn’t just about how to get more energy fast though! It also doubles as a great night ritual. Brendon has instructional video which I’ve added below.

Setting intention & priming yourself[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref]
Another technique suggested on how to increase your energy and motivation in High Performance Habits is setting an intention for the day & priming yourself.[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref].
This is simple as deciding what you want for the day & setting a routine (asking questions, exercising etc) to create those feelings.
A simple technique from Brendan that I love to boost my energy when I’m tired is choosing 3 intentions to bring to the day and setting an alarm on my phone with those words. I have mine set for 3 times a day. It’s to remind me and make me stop and question – am I bringing that today?Â
If you want a specific routine to get more energy fast, another great person to look at for intention & priming is Tony Robbins.

This priming routine is on his Time of Your Life & Get the Edge programs.
It has breathing, gratitude & visualisation all in one! The ultimate power routine!

How to increase energy and motivation
So some things you can try to get into the habit of “[generating] energy”[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref]:
- Practice taking a few minutes to breathe in between your daily “transitions” to help give you a boost of energy when you’re tired[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref]
- Set intentions for the day & create a daily, personal reminder (alarm with your intention, questions to ask yourself – again Brendon gives all this & more in his book)
- Creating a priming method for yourself like Tony Robbins one above
