“Raise Necessity”[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref]

(This series is based on the book High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way. I highly recommend this book to create real, life changing habits. I was not paid to write this OR given this book for free. I genuinely love it and have found it absolutely life changing for me – in just the few weeks of reading it – so I wanted to share it. I hope you find it the same for you!)

“Necessity is the emotional drive that makes great performance a must instead of a preference” – Brendon Burchard

Habit #3 from High Performance Habits is “raise necessity”[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref].

This ones a pretty self explanatory one. It’s all about how to find consistent motivation in life and work through your why.

Who are you doing it for? What’s your bigger cause?

Knowing this & reminding yourself is one of the best habits you can have keep your motivation in life and work.

It creates a “sense of obligation & urgency”[ref]Burchard, B. (2017). High performance habits: how extraordinary people become that way. Carlsbad: Hay House, Inc.[/ref].

It’s not just about us anymore – it’s about the people we’re serving.

I know this one personally.

On one of those doubtful days, I was considering giving in on the blog. We all know the internal dialogue on those days, don’t we?

“Who am I to do this?”, “How am I any different” etc.

Then, I found out my cousin started reading it (she’s only 13).

When she found out about it she went through and read every post. She has downloaded every free resource I’ve made.

That’s when I realised if I threw in the towel, what example would I be setting to her?

Writing this blog wasn’t just about me, it was about setting an example to do your best in life. To live how you want, even when everyone feels like they’re going the other way.

She has been my motivation in life and work to keep going.

To encourage her to put herself out there & try.

And it’s led me in everything I do. It leads me to be honest & question myself every time I do something – is this good enough, am I setting the right example.

There are more areas of necessity that Brendon discusses in depth in High Performance Habits. This was just the section that resonated with me the most and I thought would be useful.

How to raise necessity

The best way to raise necessity is to remind yourself every day who you’re doing this for!

Ask yourself

  • Who are you setting an example for today?
  • How can you be the best example for them?

A useful idea is to set an alarm with this question every morning or at a time where you know your motivation starts to fall short.

I know when I have days I don’t feel motivated, I remind myself of who I’m doing it for. It always works!
