Do you have trouble figuring out how to stay focused & stick to your goals? Then you’re in the right place! When I first set goals, I used to find it so hard to stay motivated and stick to my goals. I was always changing them and could never figure out how. Below I go through all I’ve learnt on how to stay focused & stick to your goals. There simple tips can have been super helpful in helping me set better goals for myself and create a better life in the meantime.
Create Goals Based On How You Want To Feel
Staying focused on goals and priorities has a lot to do with HOW we set those goals and priorities. For a long time I tried to figure out how to stay focused on my goals. I felt like I was always struggling to stay motivated and notoriously jumping from goal idea to goal idea. It took me a lot of hard life lessons that changed my perspective for me to see that it was how I was setting my goals that was making me struggle.
When we set goals we tend to decide on something material like a number or an item we want because we think it will bring us happiness. When really want we want is much for simple than that and can be achieved a lot sooner than we think. For example, I was always trying to start my own business. I failed so many times because I’d start something and be miserable. This was really confusing because I’d think but this is what I wanted right?
The problem was I focused on what I wanted instead of how I wanted to feel first. When I start down and tried to figure out how to stay focused on my goals and how to stick to my goals I realized I needed to choose things that were going to give me the feelings I was looking for. Although I thought starting a business was always the answer, I finally understood what I really wanted to feel was free. I wanted work that I would love doing but also felt freedom and flexibility with. Luckily I realized early on that small business can be the opposite of that! When I thought more about freedom and flexibility I set a goal to start a blog. Since then, I’ve had no issues staying focused on this goal because it’s a goal that reflects how I want to feel. I’m working towards the flexibility and freedom that a blog gives me.
So when if you’re struggling to stay focused on your goal and can’t seem to avoid distracts, take a look at the actual goal and see whether it’s bringing you the feelings you really want.

Surround Yourself By A Supportive Environment
Our environment plays a big part in how to stay focused and stick to our goals. It’s easy to get distracted when our environment isn’t supporting us. Whether it’s family telling us to follow a certain career path, a difficult set of friends or a partner that doesn’t believe in us, this all plays a part in how we focus on our goals and if we achieve them.
When we have supportive friends, families and relationships it encourages us to keep going. They can motivate us to push forward when we feel like giving up.
Surround yourself by friends and family that believe in you. If you struggle to do this, then jump online and find a supportive community. I’ve found a lot of inspiration from people who have achieved amazing things with their blogs. Their stories have motivated me. Find stories of people who are doing what you want to be doing and use that to help you stay focused on your goals.
Create A Vision Board
I’m a self proclaimed vision board queen for a good reason! I’ve had so much success with my vision boards in the past. Not one but two have come true for me. They’re a great way to get excited and stick to your goals.
My biggest secret for a vision board that works is to focus on how I want to feel, find pictures that reflect that and keep my vision board somewhere where I can see it but not necessarily focus on it every day (you can read more on my vision board tips here).
I’ve also create a video tutorial on how to create a vision board which you’ll find below. It’s honestly one of my favourite ways to stay focused on my goals and achieve them.

Practice Visualization
While I don’t practice visualization personally, I’ve heard amazing things about it. In particular there’s a author and speaker Joe Dispenza who does quite a bit of work on visualization mediation to help you stay focused on your goals and create the life you want.
This is another strategy to stay motivated. It’s all about visualizing your goals and how you’re going to achieve them. Dr. Joe Dispenza offers so many different visualization mediations too.
Listen To Motivational Content
Now this is something I practice often when it comes to how to stay focused on my goals. It’s so easy to get distracted by doubt, bad days or other peoples opinions. There are some days when we get up and we just don’t want to get started because we have zero motivation.
When I want to remember that I can stay focused on my goals and achieve them I love listening to or watching motivation content. There’s nothing like jumping on the treadmill and listening to good speech or podcast episode to get me in the mood to write or podcast myself. Here’s two pieces of content that has helped me get refocused on my goals and avoid distractions:

Practice Good Daily Routines So You Don’t Over Focus
Over-focusing on our goals is a bit of a trap we fall into! Staying focused on our goals and priorities can be good until we over focus and tire ourselves out. We don’t have an endless stream of energy or motivation, we need to rest too! This is where good daily routines come in. A good daily routine can help us to refresh or reset before or after a big day. For me, it wasn’t enough to stop working and sit on the couch. I needed to find other things I could do to help me get motivated to start working or wind down after a big day. Some things that have worked well for me is:
- Exercising daily – in the morning and then in the afternoon after working
- Practicing moving meditation like Qi Gong
- Having a healthy smoothie jam packed full of healthy fats, greens and fruit
- Practicing a 5 minute energy routine
While it’s great to stay focused on your goals and priorities, we also don’t want to burn out. A good daily routine that helps us get out of the goal setting and focusing head space and gives our mind a break is a great way to avoid this. It helps us stay focused and motivated towards our goals in the long run.
